EK KOSHISH – A crusade for the homeless

“It’s not that I don’t want to go to school, but it is necessary for me to earn as well.”

Jayanti is a homeless child in Mumbai.

She is the ONLY breadwinner of her family and supports her ailing grandmother and 5-year-old brother.

Like Jayanti, there are many young children in our country who beg for a living.  Many of whom do not have any other option. Jayanti lives in constant fear of being arrested by the police because if she begs, she is considered as a criminal as per an archaic law.

According to Supreme Court lawyer, Usha Ramanathan, “The Bombay Prevention of Begging Act is unconstitutional. It allows for custodian putting away of people who have not committed any crime – except that you constitute poverty as a crime.”

The selfless team at KOSHISH, founded by Tarique Mohammad, works relentlessly to abolish this law and to build more humane shelters for the homeless across India. They have repatriated hundreds of men, women, and children across the country and helped them reach home.

Tarique’s team ensures the safety of children, like Jayanti, and their parents that line the streets of urban cities each night. These are people looking to make a living, but face constant prosecution by the law enforcement agencies. Their documents are routinely confiscated as they struggle to build an identity for themselves. This brutality needs to stop. And it starts with YOU.

EK KOSHISH is an Impact Film about Tarique’s extraordinary journey and the ground-breaking work by team KOSHISH. This film strives to sensitise its audience on the plight of the people whom the state has relinquished responsibility for. It’s a story that must be told and must be heard by millions of people for change to happen.

With you, we can make the change. Come, join our community. Support us and be a part of our journey to raise the collective conscience of humanity.
